If you’ve ever misplaced your phone, you know it can be stressful. But Find My Phone on Windows Live can help. This free service can ring, lock, erase, or show your phone on a map from any Internet-connected PC. Find My Phone makes it easier to recover your phone or prevent someone from using it without your permission.

To use Find My Phone, visit windowsphone.live.com and log in with the same Windows Live ID you registered on your phone.

Some More Tips To Locate A Windows Phone 7

To make your phone ring

1. On your PC, open a web browser and go to windowsphone.live.com.

2. Sign in with your Windows Live ID, and then click Find My Phone.

3. Click Ring it.

Tip

To hear what the ring sounds like, click Preview ringtone. Your phone will ring even if the volume is off or it’s on vibrate mode.

To map your phone’s location

1. On your PC, open a web browser and go to windowsphone.live.com.

2. Sign in with your Windows Live ID, and then click Find My Phone.

3. Click Map it.

4. If your PC is connected to a printer, click Print map to make a hard copy of your phone’s location.

Tip

If you’ve scrolled the map and lost track of your phone’s location on it, click Center map on my phone.

To lock your phone and show a message

1. On your PC, open a web browser and go to windowsphone.live.com.

2. Sign in with your Windows Live ID, and then click Find My Phone.

3. Click Lock it.

4. If you’re prompted to enter a password, enter a 4-digit number. You’ll need this to unlock your phone when you get it back.

5. Type a message to display on the screen. Typically this is information, such as an alternative phone number or email address, that someone who finds your phone can use to contact you.

6. Click Lock.

To erase your phone

1. On your PC, open a web browser and go to windowsphone.live.com.

2. Sign in with your Windows Live ID, and then click Find My Phone.

3. Click Erase it.

4. At the confirmation message, do one of the following:

Click Yes to start erasing your phone.

Click No if you’ve changed your mind and don’t want to erase it. (Be careful! This is your last chance to back out.)

Note

It’s a good idea to let your mobile operator know that you’ve lost your phone.

To change settings for Find My Phone

Change these settings on your phone, not on your PC.

1. On Start, flick left to the App list, then tap Settings.

2. Tap Find My Phone.

3. Select one or more of the following:

Save my location periodically for better mapping. Microsoft can save your phone’s location details every few hours so that if your phone is out of range or the battery dies, we can still show your phone’s last-known location on a map.

Get results faster (may use more battery). The Find My Phone service uses text messaging to send commands to your phone. Check this option to use push notifications instead. Why? Push notifications can be faster than text messages. If your mobile operator charges you for each incoming text message, push notifications might also be cheaper.
