Jimmy and John are wrong, ctfmon.exe is also a legitimate MS program, you can remove this program from stating by doing the above steps. Run "msconfig" from run bar and you will see that its there with evey fresh install of MSXP. Doing the above steps removes it from the startup list. If you are also runnign Spybot SD, you can see the actions. Obviously someone wrote the virus as most XP systems have cftmon.exe and people become used to it running in Task Manager

this article is incorrect. it is commonly mistaken for ctfmon.exe which deals with alternate user use and language. cftmon.exe is a virus. Jimmie is correct.

FIRST locate each of 4 instances of ctfmon.exe and rename by adding .stop or .old as extension,, before renaming the last stop the process in task manager, then quickly renaming the last and then overwrite(not delete) with a guttman batch file or something similar. I note this here for those users totally irritated at MS for not asking if we wanted this feature and have a tendency not to trust so blindly and believe all of what we are told!! I have never had office products and do not need alternative input.

Checking that box doesn't stop cftmon.exe from running. I just did a clean install of XP SP3 followed by Office 2003. cftmon.exe hangs during shutdown.
