The ultrasn0w carrier unlock for the previous iPhones has always been the most popular way unlock method and today it has been made available for the iPhone 4. Be careful before proceeding with the unlock – this method of unlocking your iPhone may potentially be risky and you may lose your connectivity completely or face certain problems such as reduced battery life (as reported by some other people).
Version 1.0-1 of ultrasn0w works for:
iPhone4 baseband 01.59
3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04
For those who do not know what unlocking exactly is or what its benefits are, I’ll try to explain it in as simple terms as I can. In one word, unlocking means freedom. In the US, or for that matter wherever the iPhone is sold worldwide, it is sold with a contract and locked to a particular cellular carrier, such as AT&T. Now if you want to just pop in another SIM card and use another cellular network on your iPhone, you just can’t do it. To be able to use any other cellular network, you need to unlock your iPhone.
Here is how you can go about unlocking your iPhone.
- Jailbreak your iPhone 4 by using the method explained in a previous post by us.
- Install the Cydia app to be able to access the Cydia app store which contains a huge repository of apps for jailbroken iPhones.
- Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in the Cydia app store.
- Download and install the ‘ultrasn0w’ app. Just launch it to successfully unlock your iPhone.
Please keep in mind that there are always risks involved and you may permanently brick your phone by this method, so proceed at your own risk. Also, note down that since only certain versions of the new iOS 4 can be jailbroken, thus the unlocking process is also limited to those iOS versions.
