I use a program called Fences from Stardock, it has this same feature and lets you organize your desktop as well

i just downloaded the ran the application, and saw you have to click on the application icon in task bar but i wanted to click on desktop to hide icon, anyways it will also work

Carol it is a very simple way to hide your icon as you mentioned but double click is little more simple, thanks for the notification i also completely ignored it.
