Today I have got a tool for you which is a GUI alternative to the NSLookup(Name Server Lookup) tool which comes with the Windows Operating System named DNSDataView. The tool will allow you to retrieve all types of DNS records (NS, MX, SOA, A) from a specified domain. The tool will allow you to use your default DNS server for your Internet connection or you can also use any other DNS server that you specify. The tool will also allow you an option to save the retrieved DNS records for a desired domain into a text, HTML, XML, CSV file. The software is compatible with Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008, Windows vista and Windows 7.
This is the first screen which will open up when you will run the software for the first time after downloading it. The software doesn’t require any installation you will have run the exe file in order to start the software. The software has four toolbar options i.e. File, Edit, View and Help. The application also has an icon bar just below the toolbar which has various icons like DNS options, Save, Refresh, Properties, Find and Exit.
The above window will open up when you will click on the first icon in the icon bar which says DNS options or when you will select the first option in the File menu. After the software starts you can type one or more domain addresses for which you want to view the DNS information and then click on the button which says OK. The software will provide you the DNS records for the specified domain name or address in the main window of the tool. In case the application fails to retrieve the DNS records, you will have to manually try and type the DNS server of your Internet provider. You also have the option to specify the DNS server. You can also choose from the various types of DNS record types. There are many other options available to choose from in this window.
The File menu has various options like DNS options, Load Windows DNS Cache, Save Selected Items, Properties and Exit. You can select the various record and save them using the Save Selected Items option. Properties option will give you the properties about the selected record.
The Edit menu has options like Find, Copy Selected Items, Select All and Deselect All. The Find option is used to find a record in the list of records. The Copy Selected Items is used to copy the selected items. Select All and Deselect All are used to select and deselect all the records.
The View menu contains options like Show Grid Lines, Show Tool Tips, HTML Report – All Items, HTML Report – Selected Items, Choose Columns, Auto Size Columns and Refresh. The Show Grid Lines is used to show the grid lines between columns. HTML report can be generated either for all the items or selected items using the HTML Report – All Items and HTML Report – Selected Items options. The Choose Columns is used to select what all columns do you want to see in the tool. Auto Size Columns is used to auto size the columns according to the data that they have. Refresh option is used to refresh the records that are getting fetched dynamically.
